Taking a look at different ways to score on the main ways of guarding a ball screen, including drop coverage, hard hedge, icing and trapping.

Scoring on Drop Coverage

Snake and freeze dribble: Taking either a snake or freeze dribble keeps the guards defender behind. These dribbles can either be used to get the rim and attack the big or to find space for a midrange shot

Attack the dropping big: If the guard gets clipped on the screen the handler is only left with a dropping big in front of him. This opens up space for a jumper. If the big tries to close the space guards can use their momentum to get by to the rim

Draw help and move it: Assuming a good screen is set the big will have to guard both the handler and roller until he’s back. Once the guard has drawn help from the big he can move it inside or swing it if drawing help from anywhere else

Scoring on Blitz/Hard Hedge

Getting downhill: This can be tough considering 2 guys are trying to guard the handler off the pick. Guards can split if there’s space between defenders, retreat and get a rescreen from the big, deny the BS, or attack the top hip of the big’s defender

Move it: A hard hedge or a blitz on a BS automatically draws 2 to the ball handler and puts the weak side at a disadvantage. Staying poised and moving it back to the shake guy, in front of you to the big or across the floor are great options
